Philanthropist and Rajya Sabha MP Sudha Murty has urged the Government of Bharat to introduce strict regulations governing how children are portrayed on social media platforms. Speaking at a public event, Murty expressed concern over the growing trend of parents using their children as content creators or “child influencers” without any oversight, describing it as a serious threat to their wellbeing and future. Murty compared social media to a double-edged knife, saying it “can cut a fruit or kill a person,” emphasizing that while the platforms can be used for good, exploiting children for views, popularity, or income is ethically unacceptable. She noted that many parents are exposing their children online purely as a source of revenue, which she believes could hinder their overall development. Praising the government’s strict rules regarding children in advertisements, films, and other entertainment sectors, Murty pointed out that similar protections are missing in the social-media space. “There are so many influencers without any regulation,” she said, urging authorities to bring clear guidelines for parents and content creators. She highlighted issues such as inappropriate dressing, unsuitable dance performances, and excessive commercialization of childhood, warning that these practices could cause long-term harm. Murty stressed the need for restrictions and responsible behaviour, saying the next generation must be protected from digital exploitation. Murty concluded with a strong appeal to the Government of Bharat to implement comprehensive social-media regulations to safeguard children’s rights and dignity.
