Indians stranded in West Asia witnessed a high-stakes humanitarian and diplomatic challenge for the Indian government during the current crisis. Both the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and Prime Minister Narendra Modi are taking urgent action for protecting the safety of the Indian diaspora, the world largest, amidst the fast escalating Israel-Iran conflict. Geographically, the danger is concentrated across West Asia, specifically near the borders of Israel, Iran, and Lebanon, as well as the critical maritime corridor of the Strait of Hormuz. This escalation reached a breaking point (When) over the last 48 hours as direct military strikes and attacks on commercial vessels bound for Indian ports, such as Kandla, intensified. The main reason behind this is the geopolitical fluctuations of the region that has turned civilian centers and vital energy shipping lanes into active combat zones. To manage this, the Indian government is deploying a multi-pronged strategy. This includes high-level diplomatic negotiations to trace missing persons, the activation of emergency helplines, and the preparation of special evacuation flights (akin to Operation Ajay).
